Final Composition - Nathan Ion

Over the course of the Project and Portfolio class, the students were told to make three compositions.  Of the three compositions, the second creation was chosen to work with.  The reason that this track was chosen in particular is that this is the track that sounded the best, and it was also the one that seemed to be a favorite.  There is no title for the track but it will definitely be built and improved upon some more.  It has a gamer style and the sounds that were used really reflect that and four original sounds were used in this track.  EQs and compressors were also used in the making of this track, along with time-based effects to make the track sound more professional and complete.

The track is reminiscent of a game track and could be used as such.  It has an almost Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts kind of feel to it.  The overall track is a little dark and downbeat sounding, but it works for the type of beat this is.  It is really reminiscent of a sadder or more dangerous part of the game, something that one would have to do something very important during.  Even the tempo of the track helps to create a somber tone.

The tempo for the track is 85 BPM and the time signature is 6/8.  The sounds that were used in the rhythm tracks were part of the sunset drum kit, from which the kick drum, the snare drum, the high hats, and the sunset claps percussion were used.  In addition to the drum kit, there were three additional sounds added as well.  For the bass track, a fretless bass guitar was used.  The key that the track was written in went really well with the rest of the idea of the track.

The track was written in the key of A minor, but there were no relative or parallel keys used.  The purpose of the track was to sound like a game track and the harmony was done with an A minor chord progression with that in mind.  The melody was kept solemn and melodic in order to keep the track feeling dark.  The recording process for this was not as difficult as originally imagined.

The recording process for the original sounds went really well.  Both of the audio tracks from sections a and b were kept the same, and a tap percussion one was added into section c after a slight amount of modification.  During the recording process, there were no obstacles really, other than a slight misunderstanding in regards to the chord progression itself.  The original sections of a and b were slightly modified, as the original bassline was not correct, but for the most part, was kept the same as before.  The time-based effects that were used were also pretty much kept the same.

There were two time-based effects that were used in the track.  These effects were chorus and echo, which are common time-based effects. They were used because they bring out the sounds more in addition to the EQ.  A compressor was used on all the drum rhythms within the track, as well as on the harmony bassline and tap percussions.  The reason that compression was used is that the track needed to be free of clipping of any kind and that is what the compressor helps to stop.  EQ was used in order to clear the track up and bring the sound out more.  It also equalizes it and makes the track sound more even.
